Sound insulation and sound attenuation: mats and panels for noise control

Sound insulation measures prevent the propagation of air-borne and solid-borne noise to adjacent spaces. The effect is specified in dB as weighted sound transmission factor Rw. Working principle: The material reflects and redirects the sound waves in a different direction, reducing the intensity of the noise in the original direction of propagation.
Sound attenuation is the absorption-based reduction of air-borne noise propagation. Working principle: Sound attenuation / absorption measures lead to the partial transformation of the sound energy into heat energy. The sound absorption factor α is a measure for the absorption capacity of an acoustic material. It is calculated as the ratio of absorbed sound energy to incident sound energy. The factor α depends on the frequency of the sound waves and describes the effectiveness of acoustic measures for indoor spaces.
