Bitumen-coated membrane

What is a heavy-duty bitumen sheet?

A heavy-duty bitumen sheet is a flexible, heavy-duty insulation sheet designed to reduce structure-borne noise, vibrations and rumbling sounds. It is primarily applied to vibrating components such as sheet metal, metal surfaces or plastic parts to permanently minimise disruptive noise.

Thanks to its high mass, the heavy-duty sheet prevents vibrations from being transmitted. This results in less noise – for example, from machinery, cars, heat pumps or enclosures.

Important: Bitumen is often confused with tar. Both are black, but bitumen is a different material and is used in many technical applications today.

How does a bituminous massing sheet work?

The principle is simple:
When a structural component vibrates, noise is generated. A bituminous massing sheet acts as a vibration damper. It increases the mass of the component and converts the vibrational energy into heat. This results in:
• Resonances are reduced
• Vibrations are dampened
• Structure-borne noise is attenuated
• Rumbling and rattling are prevented

This method is one of the most effective measures for passive sound insulation.

Where is heavy-duty bituminous sheeting used?

Typical applications in the domestic sector include:
• Cars and motorhomes (door panels, boot, bodywork)
• Machinery, compressors or workshop equipment
• Heating systems, heat pumps or ventilation systems
• Boats, caravans and motorhomes
• Metal structures or housings
• Home and DIY soundproofing

Heavy-duty sheets are particularly suitable for thin-walled components, as these tend to vibrate easily and amplify noise.

Combination with other soundproofing materials

For optimal results, heavy-duty bituminous sheeting is often combined with an absorber. This creates a multi-layer system, that simultaneously:
✔ Airborne sound
✔ Structure-borne sound
✔ Vibrations
reduces.

This works well, for example, in:
• Machine casings
• Enclosures
• Vehicle insulation
• DIY soundproofing projects

Conclusion

Bitumen heavy-duty sheeting is an excellent solution if you want to reduce noise, vibrations and rumbling on metal or sheet metal surfaces without the need for complex technology. Thanks to its simple installation, this sealing material is ideal for DIY projects, vehicle upgrades and technical applications around the home.

With products such as soni HEAVY and soni HEAVY ALU soniflex offers practical solutions for vehicles, machinery and everyday technology.

FAQ – Frequently asked questions about bituminous weighting sheeting

What is bituminous weighting sheeting?
Bituminous weighting sheeting is a heavy, flexible, bitumen-based insulation material. It is used to reduce vibrations and significantly minimise the transmission of noise – particularly in the case of metal and sheet metal surfaces.

What is bitumen weighting foil used for?
Typical applications include vehicles, machine casings, household appliances, ventilation ducts and roller shutter boxes. It ensures a quieter environment wherever components rattle or clatter.

How does bitumen weighting foil work?
Due to its high weight, the foil increases the mass of vibrating surfaces. This means they move less, which reduces structure-borne noise and noticeably lowers noise levels.

Is bitumen weighting foil suitable for the home?
Yes – many DIY enthusiasts use it for soundproofing washing machines, radiators, doors or thin metal cladding. Thanks to self-adhesive versions, installation is possible even without specialist knowledge.

How is bituminous weighted membrane installed correctly?
The surface should be clean, dry and free of grease. The membrane is then cut to size, adhered and pressed down firmly. In difficult installation locations, additional mechanical fastening may be advisable.

Can bituminous weighted membrane also dampen airborne sound?
It is primarily effective against structure-borne sound and resonance. However, when combined with sound-absorbing materials, airborne sound insulation can also be improved.

How thick should bituminous heavy foil be?
That depends on the application. As a general rule, the higher the weight per unit area, the greater the insulating effect. A heavier version is recommended for surfaces subject to strong vibrations.

Are there alternatives to heavy-duty bitumen sheeting?
The surface should be clean, dry and free of grease. The sheeting is then cut to size, stuck down and pressed firmly into place. In difficult installation positions, additional mechanical fastening may be advisable.

Is bituminous weighting foil heat-resistant?
Many products are temperature-resistant and can also be used in warmer environments. However, you should always check the exact specifications in the technical data.

When is bituminous weighting foil particularly worthwhile?
When thin materials vibrate heavily or produce an annoying rumbling noise, it is one of the most effective and, at the same time, simplest solutions for noise reduction.

soni HEAVY
soni HEAVY – Highly effective heavy bitumen layer for sound and vibration insulation soni HEAVY is an elastomer-modified heavy bitumen layer laminated with a transparent polyester film. This combination ensures a particularly robust, durable and sound-insulating surface – ideal for applications in vehicle construction, mechanical engineering and technical insulation. Thanks to its high density and material flexibility, soni HEAVY offers excellent sound insulation and effective vibration damping. It prevents metal surfaces from vibrating, booming and rattling, thereby specifically reducing sources of noise. Advantages of soni HEAVY at a glance ✔ Effective sound insulation & vibration damping → reduces both structure-borne and airborne noise ✔ High material density for maximum sound reduction ✔ Self-adhesive backing for easy installation ✔ Mechanically resilient & durable ✔ Can be combined with acoustic materials such as soni COMPOSITE or soni 491 STL ✔ Suitable for technical applications, vehicles and machinery Typical areas of application for soni HEAVY ✔ Vehicle construction: engine compartment insulation, door panels, floor panels ✔ Mechanical engineering: sound insulation for housings, bonnets, covers ✔ Enclosures & panelling: soundproofing of sheet metal and partition walls ✔ Building services engineering: insulation of heating systems, roller shutter boxes, ventilation ducts ✔ Combination with acoustic absorbers: for optimised sound insulation solutions Installation instructions for soni HEAVY The self-adhesive backing makes it easy to apply to smooth, clean and grease-free surfaces. However, for vertical or overhead installation, additional mechanical fastening (e.g. with pressure strips or screws) is required to ensure permanent secure adhesion.

soni HEAVY ALU
soni HEAVY ALU is a sound-deadening layer made from elastomer-modified bitumen with an aluminum surface. The heat-reflecting effect of the aluminum layer provides soni HEAVY ALU with a good fire safety classification. Our soni HEAVY ALU anti-drumming layer is predominantly used for technical applications as well as in vehicle and machine construction. Applied to a metal structure, soni HEAVY ALU will effectively reduce the sound level and prevent the transmission of noise and vibration. As a sound-deadening layer, soni HEAVY ALU delivers the double effect of air-borne noise insulation and solid-borne noise attenuation.   The self-adhesive rear face serves primarily as an installation aid. In the case of installation on a vertical surface or on a ceiling, additional mechanical fixation is required.
